Garmin wants me to use Garmin Express to download the new release 2014.10 and send it directly to my Nuvi 1390. How do I install it into my laptop for Mapsource/Base Camp?
Thanks.
«12»Thanks.

- Use Garmin MapUpdater and select what you want and where you want to instal, l it from the View Options page. Mapupdater is always available via:
PC Version
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe
MAC Version
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg - I installed 2014.10 on my device with the backup. Installed GarminMapUpdater and tried to run. Get error message - 'This Garmin GPS device is not eligible for this update because a previous map version is not installed.'
What do I do now?
Thanks. - When do you get that message? Normally you would get a message like this if your maps were up to date:
Have the new maps been successfully installed on your GPS?
When I launch my Windows 7 'Uninstall or change a program' control panel I find these items are remaining as listed. Perhaps Map Updater requires that you should have one (or more than one?) of these residing on your computer?I installed 2014.10 on my device with the backup. Installed GarminMapUpdater and tried to run. Get error message - 'This Garmin GPS device is not eligible for this update because a previous map version is not installed.'
What do I do now?
Thanks.
This brings up a question for me. Does anyone know if it is safe for me to uninstall these items after I update to 2014.10?
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2012.40 Update 2.23 GB (Version 15.40.00)
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.10 Update 2.23 GB (Version 16.10.00)
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.20 Update 2.23 GB (Version 16.20.00)
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 Update 2.23 GB (Version 16.40.00)
Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2013.30 Update 2.23 GB (Version 16.30.00)- Yes, it's safe to uninstall the previous map versions from the PC, assuming you no longer want them there.
There is currently (hopefully not permanently) something wrong with using Garmin's MapUpdater to do the 2014.10 update. When do you get that message? Normally you would get a message like this if your maps were up to date:
Have the new maps been successfully installed on your GPS?
This is the first I've seen of getting a 'not eligible' message but there are a number of reports of people getting a message that an update is available but only for PURCHASE:- I tried using Express last night to do the update. Result after 1.5 hrs: 'cannot authenticate map'.
This morning I used Updater. Result after 2 hrs: Success! Map installed on both the Nuvi, and my PC.
What if you use 'I would like to enter a product code' and you enter this code? I think you can find code on mygarmin. This is the first I've seen of getting a 'not eligible'
Last night between approx 8pm-9:30pm, I was getting this error using MapUpdater. I also got a similar message during this time frame while using Garmin Express. I'm pretty certain that it was server related since accessing my.Garmin.com gave an 'under maintenance' error. This was probably due to server overload and it cleared up after about 9:30pm when I tried Garmin Express again and got the map update on my 3490LMT. Since it couldn't contact the update/myGarmin servers, it couldn't verify your eligibility for the map update so it displayed the 'for purchase' message...that's my guess. There is currently (hopefully not permanently) something wrong with using Garmin's MapUpdater to do the 2014.10 update
Strange but for me, Garmin Express seems to work better than any other map update method since I started using my MacBook for the update process...worked flawlessly on my end for the last few map updates.
Thank you, will do.Yes, it's safe to uninstall the previous map versions from the PC, assuming you no longer want them there.- Problem solved! Using Garmin Express, choose 'Regions', then, in the lower left hand corner, you have the options of computer only, device, or both.
Nice work! Can Garmin be any more obscure with the places they hide these options at? Geeeez! :roll:Problem solved! Using Garmin Express, choose 'Regions', then, in the lower left hand corner, you have the options of computer only, device, or both.
The option only comes up if you don't have enough room in your memory. It's been this way since GE came which I never understood.Problem solved! Using Garmin Express, choose 'Regions', then, in the lower left hand corner, you have the options of computer only, device, or both.
An email from Garmin earlier this year:Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I'm happy to help. I apologize that you are experiencing difficulties with this process. Unfortunately this option will only be visible if there is not enough internal memory on the Nuvi device to hold the entire City Navigator North America NT mapping.
Basecamp does not require the mapping to be downloaded to the computer. It will read the mapping from the device while it is plugged into the computer.- Short Answer to above: In Express, under the Device Tab, there is an ADVANCED tab.
Under that is the option to download to the computer!!!
Long Anwer:
Well, I started ATTEMPTING to download the latest map around 6 pm WEDNESDAY!
After getting all of the above mentioned woes, I have just now FINALLY got both my unit and my computer loaded with the latest map using Express!!!
So much for EXPRESS!
It took SIX HOURS just for the INSTALL of the map onto the computer AFTER THE DOWNLOAD was complete!!!
(It took over an hour to INSTALL to the unit after the download!)
Also...
initially when I first used Garmin Express, it wanted me to install the latest firmware (which I already had).
Well, Express hiccuped during the backup portion and said to 'Try Again' - only thing is there is no 'Back' button, 'Pause' button or any other selection to 'Try again'!
I ended up having to remove then reinstall Express since every attempt to download ANYTHING began with it 'locked' (Firmware selection was Greyed out, so I could not de-select it!) into trying to download the firmware but not doing anything!
So, why did Express NOT continue the nice features of MapUpdater: 1) a Pause button; and 2) Status bar for the various stages (downloading, building, etc)
Time for a walk!
What GPS? I think you mentioned that you have a 1350 in another thread. That device has a s-l-o-w USB 1.x interface. Copying large files to those devices can take forever. :)(It took over an hour to INSTALL to the unit after the download!)
It's a good thing Garmin finally moved from the serial interface that the older units had. They sure do take their time when it comes to adopting new hardware.(It took over an hour to INSTALL to the unit after the download!)
That device has a s-l-o-w USB 1.x interface. Copying large files to those devices can take forever. :)
I remember sitting and waiting for a good hour for a 19MB (megabyte) map transfer to my GPS V, never mind if the transfer failed (as it sometimes did) and you had to start all over again.
Yes, entering the product code works. It's not an issue any longer as Garmin fixed the issue yesterday. Now you get the normal 'Your Maps are up to date' message. This is the first I've seen of getting a 'not eligible'
What if you use 'I would like to enter a product code' and you enter this code? I think you can find code on mygarmin.

I don't see anything under advanced tab besides installing different voices, etc.Short Answer to above: In Express, under the Device Tab, there is an ADVANCED tab.

The only time I ever had the option to install to my computer using GE was when I didn't have enough room in my internal memory and had to choose less parts of the maps instead of all of North America, then there was an option where you choose the map sections that let you choose to install on the computer.- edited June 2013
Do you work for the NSA with a recall like that! LOL!(It took over an hour to INSTALL to the unit after the download!)

Yes, I have a 1300LM.
Previously, I have used Map Updater and if I recall correctly (Not that I would bet on THAT nowadays!), it only took about 20 minutes or so for the install to the unit after the map build stage was complete.
It seemed to me that Express slowed down EVERYTHING on my computer!!!
If I didn't run into a brick wall yesterday, er, Wednesday with MapUpdater, I would never have tried Express.
In the future, I think I will go back to MapUpdater - assuming it works in the future, that is! - Very strange. Some folks recording excellent results with Express, some not. Some swear by MapUpdater, for others it doesn't work. Guess it all boils down to which you and/or your PC prefer
- This was my first occasion using Garmin Express and while pecking around, I 'found' that Advanced Tab under Device. (Perhaps it's the latest version that comes with this tab?)
At the bottom of the screen, it asks where to download onto the computer with a default of Garmin Maps folder.
(I selected a different drive & folder, and other than being REALLY SLOW, it worked.)
FWIW, after clicking the Install button, 'Added to Update Que' (or some such...) appears at the top of the screen and when you go back to the Update tab, it shows up in the list with it being in progress. - NOTE: I have not tried the below as described.
I just came across this in an email from the [email protected]:

This from Ben at Garmin:
Great question. This is an issue that many of our customers have experienced because the original Garmin Express did not offer this option. It has been updated to now do this. Open Garmin Express and connect your device. Hit 'device' and then 'reinstall'. In the bottom left corner of Express you will see a dropdown arrow. Select this and change the location to 'computer only' - because the maps in your device are already updated, in the future you will likely use 'device and computer'. You can then hit install and the map will download to your computer so it can be used in BaseCamp. Let me know if you run into any problems.
-- - Interesting .. doesn't work in my version of Express (2.1.13).
- Doesn't work for me either. Using the same version - 2.1.13
The version that I downloaded yesterday is 2.2.12.Interesting .. doesn't work in my version of Express (2.1.13).
Does the '.12' mean that I went Back to the Future???- VERY weird then, as I just unistalled and re-installed Express as I know in the past it hasn't reported updates to itself correctly ... but got 2.1.13 again!
I wonder if Garmin is using the dart board to choose which version of Garmin Express they'll be hosting for the day. :roll:Express as I know in the past it hasn't reported updates to itself correctly ... but got 2.1.13 again!- edited June 2013
OK, I just tried the above and it does not jive with what I have! (Ver 2.2.12)NOTE: I have not tried the below as described.

After rebooting the computer, letting everything 'settle down', I then connect the nuvi 1300.
Garmin Express senses the unit being connected and launches.
It then states on the Update page that everything is up-to-date.
I clicked on Check for Updates.
And after QUITE A FEW MINUTES, it comes back with a file for download re: traffic receiver. (Which I do not need.)
I find there is no OPTION selection for unit or computer under the Device/Reinstall tabs, but I do have the option to download to the computer under the Device/Advanced tabs.
(I also notice that I no longer have the option to change (again, that is) the directory for where the computer download will go to!!! Same for Backup location.) (I had previously changed the location to an external hard drive...)
FWIW, I downloaded the GarminExpressInstaller.exe at 7:30 am CST. (Clicking on properties it states: File Version 2.2.12.0)VERY weird then, as I just unistalled and re-installed Express as I know in the past it hasn't reported updates to itself correctly ... but got 2.1.13 again!
Under the Signature tab it states: Signing Time: Tuesday, June 11, 2013 8:27:10 AM

.
Did you select Check for Updates under the Settings/About tabs?
I ***fear*** ever doing THAT since I seem to have a version that works! LOL!
.- That's funny :)
Here you can download Express 2.1.13:
http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html
File is:
http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/GarminExpress.exe
Now I have clicked on 'Download' button in mygarmin account and I have received version 2.2.13:
http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/B/GarminExpressInstaller.exe
But this has happened only once, when I try to repeat download from mygarmin, I get again version 2.1.13.
I have no idea where is 2.2.12, sorry ;) - Garmin dartboard again :)
Thanks popej, I now have 2.2.13
It definitely allows maps to be sent to PC, but under Device, Advanced:
I signed into Garmin, selected Manage Maps; it then told me a new version of Communicator was available...That's funny :)
...I have no idea where is 2.2.12, sorry ;)
And after the requisite download, the Garmin Communicator program NOT working, cussing, restarting, etc, I finally got back to the Garmin site, selected Manage Maps again, then it said I needed to install Express!
And THAT is how I got version 2.2.12 yesterday a.m.! (Thursday a.m, that is.)
[This was after trying MapUpdater twice - once where after 12 hours, it was only less than halfway finished so I PAUSED it with their lovely PAUSE button.
But a glitch happened, so I retried from the getgo with MapUpdater again and this time they wanted me to either buy the update or enter a code. I think I was improperly sticking one finger in my right ear, while hopping on my left foot or something....]
It definitely allows maps to be sent to PC, but under Device, Advanced:
Heeeeyyyyy, THAT's what *I* said! LOL!!!
And yes, THAT is the screen I have been talking about! :-)
[As stated before, I don't know why they only let you change the directory ONCE and then it is greyed out if you ever want to change the location of the download! Same for Backup location!!!]
.

.Garmin dartboard again :)
Thanks popej, I now have 2.2.13
It definitely allows maps to be sent to PC, but under Device, Advanced:
I hate to belabor this, but are you sure that is ver 2.2.13??

.- edited June 2013
I wonder what foolishness I'll run into when I try this on the MacBook later on...I still need to update my 765T and install the maps so BaseCamp can access them (without the nuvi connected, please). Whichever version I used the other day to update the maps, I wipe off soon after the map update to GPS. From what I recall, initial installation provided a means to install to the Mac as well as the GPS but I don't remember if that same option is provided after you've chosen to install to GPS only...Garmin dartboard again :)
Thanks popej, I now have 2.2.13
It definitely allows maps to be sent to PC, but under Device, Advanced:
Note that I use both Mac and PC but would rather stick with one, and right now, that one is the Mac.
Strange, I don't get it. I don't have the option to download to my computer like in the screenshot and I have the 2.2.13 version.Garmin dartboard again :)

.- OK, I give up - how do you post a screen shot!
- I guess I was wrong I have 2.1.13 not 2.2.13 but it says my 2.1.13 is the latest. Does if have to do with the country you live in? I'm in the US.
- Thanks, now have 2.2.13 and have the option under the advanced tab to install to computer.
Yahtzee! Thanks, now have 2.2.13 and have the option under the advanced tab to install to computer.
I gambled going from 2.2.12 and now have 2.2.13, too - and it still has 'all the bells and whistles'!
Fixed now.. :)There is currently (hopefully not permanently) something wrong with using Garmin's MapUpdater to do the 2014.10 update.
This is the first I've seen of getting a 'not eligible' message but there are a number of reports of people getting a message that an update is available but only for PURCHASE:- Erroneously I used the Garmin Express to update my maps tonight. I will say it was quick. 45 minutes or less and it was done.
I checked my Garmin afterwards, and it shows the latest update is on board. - I had to use Express to download the 2014.10 update today to my nuvi1300. First off, it said I had a successful download/update, but when I started up the 1300, there were no maps! Did a re-install which was much shorter and the maps were then present and opened on the unit OK.
I would have used MapUpdater first off, but searches for 'mapupdater and map updater' on Garmin turned up nothing and so I used Express instead, then later I found this thread I had bookmarked with the link to MapUpdater....ARGGHHH!!! Wish I had found it earlier. :(
Anyway, the updates are now on the GPS, but I did not see, or notice, the option in the Advanced tab for download to the PC also.
Can I now go back into Express, select Reinstall and then use the Advanced tab to place an update on the PC (if it will allow that now), or would it be better to use MapUpdater since I now have it?? - To take all of the guess work out of a reinstall, I would use Garmin's MapUpdater and just select 'install to computer' from the options shown under the View or Install Options tab.
Thanks for the insight on MapUpdater. :)To take all of the guess work out of a reinstall, I would use Garmin's MapUpdater and just select 'install to computer' from the options shown under the View or Install Options tab.
I sorta figured the MapUpdater route would be the safest way. I've used it before, and it was easy to navigate. When used before, one could easily select GPS, PC or both without having to find hidden menu options.
